Star Destroyer

For Star Wars Day (May the 4th be with you, all you Star Wars Fans), we created our own take on a Star Destroyer.

We used the Imperial Star Destroyer from the official Star Wars website as a reference image.

Our Process

Creating the base model

  1. Create a cube
  2. Apply a mirror effect to create a symmetrical model
  3. Extrude the sides inwards
  4. Use the knife tool to create geometries on the top of the ship
  5. Extrude the geometries inwards.

Creating the Top Decks

  1. Outline the top decks using the knife tool and extrude the top decks upwards
  2. Next we tackle the ship lights
  3. Select the default cube
  4. Make 3 different sized cubes and apply light emission effects to them with a random spread

Adding jets and lighting

  1. Add a light source to the scene
  2. Move to the jet engine at the back
  3. Use the cylinder tool next
  4. Resize the cylinders and add some additional details

Model Animation

  1. Apply an animation to move the effects in random circles
  2. Apply a colour emission

Surfaces and Effects

  1. Apply metal effect on the ship by turning the metallic setting up and roughness setting down
  2. Apply a colour to the current surfaces
  3. Add emission settings for the jet engines
  4. Use a circle extruder and extrude inwards to an open point and apply emission effects

Scene Background

  1. Making the background full of stars
  2. To achieve this, I applied a mixture of nodes
  3. Make a planet Earth

Scene Animation

  1. Finally animate the ship to move in the right direction and right speed
  2. Place a camera in the right place then render it out to check

Final Render

  1. Apply a final bake of the render to improve the smoothness of the animation playback.. et voila.
